Serge Romanchak Piano Studio is located in Vienna, Virginia. Serge is dedicated to teaching piano students and has performed for audiences in Northern Virginia and throughout the Washington DC metro area for more than 30 years.
Serge has been teaching piano since graduation from Catholic University in 1977. His students have continued their musical studies at the Berklee School of Music, Chicago Institute for the Arts, University of Virginia, and William and Mary, among many others.
He teaches students of all ages and levels but recommends starting private piano lessons at the age of seven. This is the age at which the vast majority of students are ready to learn note-reading, to count while playing, and also focus on the mechanical aspects of piano playing.
A solid foundation in keyboard harmony is a critical ingredient in piano studies, which he stresses along with fluid note-reading and building a repertoire. He teaches many different styles including classical, jazz, rock, and Broadway show tunes.
“Success is dependent on good teamwork between student, parents, and teacher. The teacher needs to supply accurate and pertinent information, the student needs to have dedicated practice times, and the parents need to enforce a regular and systematic practice routine. If a student has the desire and the dedication to practice, I guarantee good results.”
Please contact Serge with any questions, to inquire about lesson availability, and for performance bookings.
When deciding on the purchase of a new or rebuilt acoustic piano, Serge will, at no charge, play and assess the instrument. Now you can be confident that you are making a quality purchase that will last more than a lifetime.
Serge Romanchak received his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from West Chester State University, studying with Benjamin Whitten. He continued his graduate work at The Catholic University of America, studying with Emerson Meyers and George Manos. While at Catholic U., Serge participated in Master Classes with Bela Nagy, Leon Fleisher, and other eminent pianists and was chosen to perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the University Orchestra. After graduating in 1977 from Catholic University with a Master of Music in piano performance, Mr. Romanchak continued his piano studies with Alexander Lipsky and began his teaching career.
Mr. Romanchak is one of the Principal Conductors of the St. Nicholas Cathedral Choir in Washington, D.C. He also performs as a soloist and chamber musician in the Washington, DC, metro area. He has given recitals at the French Embassy, Anderson House Museum, DACOR-Bacon House, The Lyceum, and The Allentown Art Museum. Serge also appears as a jazz pianist and has performed in events for The Supreme Court, Kawai Music Corp., The Fairfax Symphony, and Jordan Kitts Music Corp.
His CD, Serge Romanchak Plays Ravel and Chopin, was released in 2010.

“Your recording is tops. The technical aspects of the disc are very good. If I was a music critic, I would say: In Mr. Romanchak’s performance, subtle gradations of keystroke intensity combined with a gentle fluidity of tempo to create and enforce subtle nuances of musical thought … human emotions sculpted in sound. I love the valse and the birds and the bells … the bells are magical and the birds do not disappoint. I love all the Chopin.”
”Thrilled to receive your CD. For me, it’s a chance to hear your lush playing again with your signature technique that extends to the very depths of what the keys on the piano will provide. We love the elegant Ravel waltzes and the quiet of the Sorrowful Birds and the Valley of the Bells, and I especially enjoy the noble innocence of the first nocturne on the CD – in F, Opus 15 (Chopin), plus the sweeping C minor (Opus 25, No. 12) Etude.”
The first meeting with a prospective student is a short lesson where I learn how the student responds to my information and I decide if we can work together. I use many different books and try to find out what motivates the student. After the first few lessons, parents should not stay in the studio.
I do not guarantee make-up lessons for injuries, inclement weather, or sick days. I want students who sustain hand injuries to attend their lessons. We will study one hand alone, music theory or history.
Disciplined practice habits are necessary in order to improve technique and develop artistically.
I hold one recital every year in which my students have the opportunity to perform for parents, relatives, and friends.
